Davis Graham & Stubbs attorneys have a long tradition serving Colorado's business, professional, civic and cultural communities. Our lawyers take leadership roles in legal professional organizations, law schools, pro bono representations, charitable and civic organizations, and governmental agencies, boards and commissions. We ask our attorneys to get involved in what they love and make a difference with their involvement.
Service to the Profession
DGS lawyers serve the legal profession as leaders year after year. Two attorneys have been president of the Colorado Bar Association, two have served as president of the Denver Bar Association, and others have served as president of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Colorado, president of the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association, and chair of the CBA's Diversity in the Legal Profession committee.
Across the legal profession, DGS attorneys have served as chair of the Colorado Lawyers Committee, the Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado and the Colorado Judicial Institute. The mission of the Colorado Lawyers Committee is to increase opportunities for children, the poor, and other disadvantaged communities through advocacy, negotiation, and litigation. The Legal Aid Foundation seeks to provide free legal services to the state's low-income citizens. The Colorado Judicial Institute works to promote excellence in the Colorado judicial system. DGS makes a sizable donation for each of its lawyers to both the Colorado Lawyers Committee and the Legal Aid Foundation of Colorado to support their work.
Former Supreme Court Justice Byron White was a DGS alumnus, as is a judge of the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, justices on Colorado's Supreme Court, Colorado's Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado.
DGS lawyers also serve their profession by teaching. One of our retired attorneys, Clyde Martz, is considered a pioneer in oil and gas law and water law, instituting those courses in natural resources at the University of Colorado School of Law. In recognition of these and other contributions to his profession, he was named the school's 1999 alumnus of the year. DGS attorneys have taught environmental, bankruptcy, antitrust and tax law at the CU School of Law and the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, as well as local business schools and institutes, and many other DGS attorneys share what they've learned through regional and national continuing legal education programs.
Pro Bono Work
The firm's investment in pro bono legal services is demonstrated by its participation in the Colorado Supreme Court’s Pro Bono Commitment Program. DGS has been recognized by the Colorado Supreme Court for providing 50 hours of pro bono legal services per lawyer, on average, primarily for indigent persons or organizations that serve indigent persons. DGS lawyers are also active on the task forces of the Colorado Lawyers Committee. A few years ago, DGS was named that organization's “Law Firm of the Year" for its work on an historic Colorado voting rights case that resulted in the re-drawing of legislative districts in the San Luis Valley to give Hispanic voters a stronger voice in the selection of their legislators. Another DGS lawyer received the CLC's Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award for pro bono activities on behalf of the disadvantaged. We also participated in a class-action lawsuit against state agencies and two Denver metro counties that successfully challenged a state welfare reform program that unlawfully cut off cash benefits to some welfare clients.
DGS has partnered with the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center, a unique nonprofit organization that has protected abused and neglected children for more than two decades. The RMCLC is devoted to the preservation of safe and healthy families, and to systemic reform and legal representation. More than 20 DGS lawyers provide pro bono legal services to RMCLC clients, and the firm provides both financial and training support to the organization to help it expand its reach in the community.
Recognizing this exceptional effort, the Colorado Bar Association named one of its top annual pro bono awards after one of our senior attorneys, the Donald W. Hoagland Pro Bono Award.
Community Involvement
DGS encourages its attorneys to be active in the business community and in the community at large. In fact, the firm targets its charitable contributions to organizations in which a DGS attorney plays a leadership role – and there are many.
DGS lawyers have headed the Mile High United Way, Rotary International, the local chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Denver Public School Board. DGS attorneys are serving or have served on the board of the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Children's Museum, the Denver Public Library, Young Fund of Denver Children's Hospital, the National Western Stock Show Association, the Metro Denver Sports Commission, the Allied Jewish Federation, the American Cancer Society, the Boy Scouts of America, the Boys and Girls Clubs, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado, KidsTek, the Colorado Business & Professional Women Education Foundation, and the Colorado Children's Campaign.
Other attorneys have been actively involved with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Family Futures, Food Bank of the Rockies, Urban Peak, Colorado Conservation Voters, Japan America Society of Colorado, Women’s Foundation of Colorado, Lutheran Family Services, Project PAVE, The Gathering Place, Family Star, Mile High Child Care Association, Safehouse for Battered Women, the Shaka Franklin Foundation for Youth, Volunteers of America, Water for People and the Westernaires.
DGS has also conducted an annual holiday toy drive over the last several years focusing on children who are in a Denver Social Services network foster program; our support of this program has ensured that every child in the program has received a gift during the annual holiday family visit. Since 2005 DGS has participated in the Arrupe Jesuit High School work-study program, sponsoring four students as part of their college-prep education and tuition savings program.
In 2000 we began a partnership with Senior Housing Options, which operates the historic Barth Hotel in Lower Downtown Denver. The Barth Hotel offers affordable housing for low- and moderate-income seniors. In addition to financial support, DGS attorneys and staff provide occasional entertainment for Barth Hotel residents, such as a 4th of July picnic meal or holiday caroling. In 2005 DGS was a primary donor for their "Adopt-a-Room" campaign, providing significant funding to renovate their Medication Center.
