Profile

James Whitmire is a partner in the Income Tax, Benefits & Estates Group.  James is a co-author of the 4th Edition of the leading treatise on partnership taxation:  “Federal Taxation of Partnerships and Partners,” as well as the author of the Partnership Formation volume of Thomson Reuters’ Tax Advisors Planning System.  In addition to specializing in all aspects of the taxation of partners and partnerships, James has represented clients on a wide variety of federal income tax matters including mergers and acquisitions, tax shelter promoter audits, and golden parachute issues.  James has advised clients with respect to the federal income tax consequences of investments in alternative energy sources on matters ranging from structuring of investment to monetization of federal tax credits.

James has published widely and speaks often on matters involving federal income tax.  Prior to joining Davis Graham & Stubbs, James was an associate with the Denver law firms Olson Lemons PC and Holland & Hart LLP.  He also spent two years at Ernst & Young’s National Tax Office in the Partnerships and Joint Ventures group. During law school at the University of Virginia, James served on the editorial board of the Virginia Tax Review and was awarded the Edwin S. Cohen tax scholarship.  He is a member of the American, Colorado, and Virginia Bar Associations.
