Profile

Shannon Stevenson is a partner in the trial group with extensive experience in all phases of litigation and arbitration, as well as special expertise in appellate proceedings.  Ms. Stevenson has represented a wide variety of clients, but has particular expertise litigating for clients in the energy, natural resources, and construction sectors.

Some of her recent cases include:

  • Obtained a favorable judgment for a U.S. coal mining company against its utility customer in a series of arbitrations related to multiple aspects of the parties’ coal supply agreement, resulting in an assignment of $70 million reclamation obligation to the utility.
  • Defended a U.S. cement manufacturer against an international coal mining company’s claim for breach of a coal supply agreement, resulting in a favorable renegotiation of the agreement.
  • Following a five-day jury trial, obtained a complete defense verdict for a public oil and gas exploration company on a $13 million claim for breach of implied covenants.
  • Represented an international oil and gas company in appeal from adverse trial court ruling ordering sale of an oil and gas property valued between $35 and $84 million.
  • Achieved numerous dismissals and favorable settlements on behalf of a national residential homebuilder on a wide variety of construction defect claims.
  • Achieved summary judgment for a real estate developer on a multi-million dollar premises liability claim arising from ski injury adjacent to major resort.
  • Obtained a favorable settlement for a subcontractor on a major Summit County hotel project following the litigation of a lien foreclosure suit and related bankruptcy proceedings.

Ms. Stevenson is active in the Denver legal community. She has served on the Board of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association for the last three years, previously serving as the co-chair of the CWBA’s judicial committee and is currently the co-chair of its public policy committee. She has briefed and argued multiple appeals on behalf of indigent prisoners to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit as part of the Circuit’s Criminal Justice Act Panel. Ms. Stevenson was also recently appointed to the Screening Committee for the newly-created Colorado Appellate Pro Bono Panel.

Ms. Stevenson graduated from Duke University School of Law (magna cum laude, Order of the Coif), where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Duke Law Journal. Following law school, Ms. Stevenson clerked on the United States Court of Appeals for the Honorable David M. Ebel.
